Work Experience was made in response to Thérèse Lessore’s work the New Cap as part of The London Group exhibition 111 Not out at Quay Arts on the Isle of Wight. Thérèse was one of the founding members of The London Group and the exhibition coincided with the 110th anniversary of the very first exhibition.
Thérèse painted the hop pickers in Kent near to where she lived. In response I filmed at Albury Vineyard close to Dorking. I visited the vineyard during the harvest, when a team of volunteers worked alongside the Romanian professional pickers to bring in the grapes. I then went back in the winter to see the vines being cut back.
I was delighted to experience Thérèse’s work The New Cap at Brighton & Hove Museum.
The resulting film considers how we experience work in all its guises.
